Father's Day French Toast Casserole

  • Enough stale bread to fill a 9x13 baking pan. I use old hamburger or hot dog buns, loaf bread, or dinner rolls.
  • 1 dozen eggs
  • 2 c. of milk
  • 2/3 c. of brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. of nutmeg
  • 1 stick of butter



  • Melt the stick of butter.
  • In a small bowl, mix 1/3 c. of brown sugar with 1/2 of the melted butter. Then, pour into the bottom of baking dish.
  • Break up the stale bread and put into the baking dish on top of the brown sugar mixture.
  • Whisk eggs, milk, 1/3 c. of brown sugar, the remainder of the melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. When blended well, pour evenly across the top of the stale bread.
  • Cover with foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate several hours or overnight.
  • When you are ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees, take covering off the casserole, sprinkle cinnamon over the surface of the casserole, and bake when the oven is preheated.
  • Bake for 45 minutes or until top is golden brown. (The casserole will be very "puffed up" when you remove it from the oven and will deflate as it cools.)
  • Plate servings, top with syrup and serve.


You could also mix pecans into this casserole prior to baking. Top this French Toast Casserole with maple syrup or powdered sugar and fruit. It's delicious either way!
