Best Free Apps for Preschoolers and Kindergarteners

Let me just start by stating that I don’t believe that learning apps should ever be used as the only means of homeschooling your child, but they can be your saving grace on those days when you just can’t do the homeschool mom thing. These are some of the best free apps for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

You know what I’m talking about. The days when you’re not sick enough to be in bed, but not well enough to be at the top of your homeschool game. The days when you just need to read a book to the kiddos, or give them some coloring pages, and let them do something on their own, because you have some sort of chore, activity, or blog post, uhem, that must get done.

Our 2018-2019 Homeschool Schedule — Blocks of Time gives you an idea of how our normal homeschool day looks.

In your home, there may be days you’re coping with the effects of a chronic illness or caring for aging parents.

These apps are some that my family uses to help fill in the gaps on the days I’m not able to do it all. They’re also the apps that my younger children prefer to play most often over and above the other, not-so-educational games on their tablets.

I hope they’re helpful to you.

123 Numbers – Count & Tracing

Teaching number recognition and basic counting skills, this completely free, no third-party ads and no in-app purchases will teach your children learning can be a lot of fun.

ABC Kids – Tracing & Phonics

An early education app that teaches the alphabet, upper and lower case, it includes ABC tracing, phonics pairing, and letter matching. This app is from the makers of 123 Numbers – Count & Tracing and is also completely free with no third-party ads or in-app purchases.

Monkey Preschool Explorers!

This app teaches numbers, upper and lower case letters, colors, shapes and more. There are also puzzles that encourage thinking skills with fun challenges. This is a free app if you have Amazon Prime. If you don’t have an Amazon Prime account, it’s $2.99. A great deal if you think about how much your child will be learning. There are other apps from the makers of this app. They all seem to have great reviews.

Starfall ABC’s

Children interact with letters and sounds in words, sentences, and games. This free app helps children to recognize letters and sounds.

Khan Kids

My kids LOVE this app. There are learning games, videos, and lots of ways to interact and learn with Khan Kids and each of your children can have his or her own profile. This completely free app has no ads or in-app purchases.

Preschool and Kindergarten Learning Games by RosiMosi

This is an awesome little free app that teaches shapes and numbers. You can make an in-app purchase and unlock other levels. That price is $3.99. I’m seriously thinking of taking the leap as this is another of my little kiddos’ favorite apps.

My family has found so much value in using these apps to supplement our schooling. I sincerely hope yours does too.
